Charleston

Charleston is a large coastal city and the county seat of Charleston County, South Carolina. It is the largest and oldest city in the state and has over 40 neighborhoods. It is the largest and main anchor city of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area. The city is located on Charleston Harbor at the junction of three rivers, the Ashley, Cooper and the Wando. The city is well known for its historic architecture and southern hospitality. The city was named in honor of King Charles of England and was first known as Charles Town. Settlement of the area began in the 1670s and the oldest known stone building in the city is the Pink House, which was built from Bermudian limestone sometime between 1694 and 1712. In its early years, the towns economic base rested on pine timber, pitch and tobacco. Later rice and indigo also became popular cash crops. The town’s name was officially changed to Charleston in 1783 when it was officially incorporated. In 2022, the population was approximately 419,279 and the estimated median household income was $70,807. In the same year, the mean home price was $470,219 and the median gross rent was $1,938. Today the thriving city is a predominantly white-collar community that spans 127.5 square miles of beautiful coastal landscape.
